How to Save Energy in Your Kitchen : Select Right size Rice Cooker



Do you aware that electric rice cooker is the second largest power consumption in our kitchen ?

Do you ever bother to check rice cooker name plate? Are you using  correct size electric rice cooker to prepare for 1-4 people meal daily?

Today, cost living in Malaysia is getting expensive and most of the household ladies begin to shift from eating out to home cooking dining for their family in order to cope the reduction of disposable income.

Let say smart kitchen lady cooking for two meals per day and each time last for  30 minutes,

30min/60min x 2 times x 0.45kw  x RM0.40 (Electricity Tariff) x 30 days =RM5.40 Per month 




How much this family will spend if using the bigger size rice cooker with same amount of servicing?

1.8 Litre Rice Cooker rated at 832W


30min/60min x 2 times x 0.832kw  x RM0.40 (Electricity Tariff) x 30 days =RM10.00 Per month



Conclusion:
1 litre Rice cooker is good enough to serve meal for 2-4 person daily. So, why waste energy  and  use big rice cooker to cook small amount of rice?

Bigger size of rice cooker not doubt will consume more power consumption. In this example, 1.8 Litre Rice cooker consumes almost double electricity compared to 1 Litre Rice cooker.

Time for all kitchen ladies changing their mind now. Big is not always good in this case :-)

Saving of RM60 per year in your electricity bill will give a boost in your home saving fund.

電費漲!學省電竅門省錢


隨著電費喊漲已成事實後,要在百物喊漲的情況下維持舊有的生活模式已不太可能,所以很多人也開始想辦法節省開銷來減少經濟負擔。
由大馬水務與能源研究協會提供的省電竅門,讓大家從生活中學習省電,環保節能和節省開銷。
【客廳】省電方法
1)電器關電拔插頭
在使用遙控器關掉電器如電視機、電腦、打印機、VCD、DVD和CD播放器後,這些電器會處於待機狀態(Stand By Mode)或睡眠狀態(Sleeping Mode),並且會繼續消耗電力。因此,你應在沒使用這些電器時,就關掉電源並拔掉插頭。
2)電腦完全關電
當你超過30分鍾不會使用你的電腦時,你應該將你的電腦完全關掉(Switch Off Completely)。每天晚上讓你的電腦開至隔天(8小時),你每月須多付13令吉零8仙至20令吉93仙(每台電腦)的電費。(根據電腦的用電量:250-400瓦,最低電費率:0.218令吉/kWh)
3)筆記電腦及平板更省電
使用筆記本電腦或平面電腦。比起普通電腦,筆記本電腦將可節省高達30%的電力。
4)封閉空間用冷氣
應避免在不封閉空間(Open Space)如客廳和廚房使用冷氣機。這是因為冷氣機在封閉的空間(如睡房)操作才能有效節能。在不封閉的空間使用冷氣機只會造成你的電費白白地上漲,而且一定要避免在不封閉的空間使用變頻冷氣機(Inverter Air Conditioner)。
【房間】省電方法
■冷氣機
1)風扇取代冷氣機
如只要空氣流通,可以使用風扇。風扇的耗電量一般上是冷氣機的3%至10%。
2)調高冷氣溫度
當冷氣機的溫度設得越低,它的耗電量就越高。如果你須使用冷氣機,可將溫度設定在攝氏24至26度之間。將溫度提高攝氏3度,可助你節省約30%的用電量。
3)空間作間隔
你可考慮在你屋內的空間作間隔(Partitioning),如在客廳和廚房之間加上一道門。這樣,你的冷氣機將能更有效冷卻特定的空間如客廳。請記得,需要冷卻的地方(其空氣量)與你的電費是成正比。因此,你應儘量減少需要冷卻的地方(其空間)。
4)使用定時器
使用定時器設定提前半小時關掉冷氣機,一年內可以節省約35令吉。(根據冷氣機的用電量:900瓦,最低電費率:0.218令吉/kWh)
5)定期檢查濾塵網
每月檢查冷氣機的濾塵網(AirFilter)一次,並在必要時清洗或更換這濾塵網,讓佈滿灰塵的濾塵網將減少空氣流通,並且減低冷氣機的效率。
6)定期維修
定期維修你冷氣機的零件或機組。除了濾塵網,冷氣機的其他零件(如製冷劑、連接管和馬達)的狀態也將影響冷氣機的效率。
7)避免用高熱電器
避免在冷氣房內使用高熱負載(Expel Heat)的電器或用具,如熨斗、吹風筒、炊具等。
8)選擇冷氣機指南
下列是(簡單的)選擇冷氣機馬力(Horse Power)大小的指南。定要避免選擇太大或太小馬力的冷氣機,不然你的用電量只會白白地增加。
房間大小/冷氣機(馬力)
12×12呎 <1 br="" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">14×14呎 1–1.5
14×16呎 1.5
15×16呎 1.5–2.0
18×18呎 2.0–2.5
21×21呎 2.5–3.0
■熱水器(浴室)
如果你有一個儲槽式熱水器(Storage Water Heater),在洗澡之前先讓它開約20分鐘,使用後將它關掉,讓它開太久只會浪費電。
【廚房】省電方法
■冰箱或冰柜(Freezer)
1)調整溫度
使用冰箱或冰柜的節溫器(Thermostat)調整冰箱或冰柜的溫度至建議的溫度(RecommendedSetting)。冰箱或冰柜過冷只會浪費電力。
2)食物冷卻才儲存
不要將熱的食物直接放入冰箱或冰柜。讓食物冷卻後才放入冰箱或冰柜。
3)蓋好食物飲料
將冰箱裡的飲品蓋好和食物包好。沒蓋上的食物將釋放水分。
這將使得壓縮機(Compressor)須更多的電力來操作,最終增加耗電量。
4)保留儲存空間
冰箱應該是三分之二滿和冰柜應是四分之三滿。不要讓冰箱或冰柜太滿,因為這樣會阻止冷空氣的流通。
5)想好才開冰箱門
打開冰箱或冰柜的門前,先確定你想要拿甚麼。頻頻打開冰箱或冰柜,會降低其冷度(每打開一次將會流失近三分之一的冷空氣)。這將造成需耗更多的電來冷卻冰箱或冰柜。
6)確保冰箱門緊閉
*確保冰箱或冰柜的門是緊閉。你可做一個簡單的測試:在關上冰箱或冰柜的門前放一張紙,即紙的一半在冰箱或冰柜的裡面,另一半則在外面。如果你可以輕易將紙張拉出,那你可能需調整冰箱門的鉸鏈(Hinge)或更換密合墊(Magnet Seal)。
7)遠離陽光熱源
冰箱或冰柜必須放置在遠離陽光直射、爐灶和烤箱等熱源(Heat Source)的地方。
8)保留周圍距離
*確保冰箱或冰柜的周圍有足夠的空間(5公分或由製造商指定的距離)。這將能更有效地散開壓縮機和冷凝盤管(Condensing Coil)的熱氣。
9)定期清理除霜
維修冰箱或冰柜是很重要的,應定期清理冷凝盤管,並根據製造商的建議替冰箱或冰柜除霜(Defrost)。
■洗衣機
1)積量才洗
衣物累積到一定數量時才用洗衣機請洗。這有助節省更多的電力。
2)使用冷水
使用冷水(自來水)清洗衣物。一些洗衣機備有熱水功能,但這功能對我們來說是沒必要。因為比起那些四季國如歐洲,我們的水已經夠暖,足以有效的清洗衣物。
3)陽光取代烘衣機
比起使用烘衣機,我們最好利用陽光曬幹衣物。
根據美國Energuide(與我國的5星能源標籤相似),如果你每年使用烘衣機達416次,那麼耗電量將介於898kWh(最節能)和950kWh(最耗電)之間。以最低電費率來算,你一年內須付的電費將介於195令吉76仙和207令吉10仙。但是,你現在只需利用陽光就可以輕鬆地曬幹衣物,而且是免費的。
同時,把衣物放入烘衣機來烘幹將更容易損壞衣物,並且比起以陽光曬幹,衣物也更快地褪色。(最低電費率:0.218令吉/kWh)
■熨燙衣物
1)以熱度需要排序熨燙
熨燙衣物時,先開始燙只需較低熱度的衣物,以及避免熨斗需加熱(Heating)和重新加熱(Re-heating)。
2)同時熨燙所有的衣物。
3)關電還可熨衣物
關掉熨斗時,可用熨斗的餘熱來熨燙只需低熱度的衣物。
■烹飪
1)電熱水壺較省電
相較於煤氣爐和電磁爐(InductionCooker),電熱水壺使用較少的能源來煮沸水。
2)用正確尺寸器皿烹飪
使用較小的鍋,但開大煤氣爐的火來煲水,將造成低能源效率(EnergyEfficiency),這是因為大量的熱能從煤氣爐流失。因此,使用正確尺寸的器皿來烹飪是非常重要,以便優化熱能的使用率(Heat EnergyUtilisation)。
3)使用線圈型電熱水壺
平底型電熱水壺的加熱效率不但比線圈型電熱水壺的加熱效率稍低,而且平底型電熱水壺的售價比線圈型電熱水壺高幾倍。如果你每天都會煲大量的水,建議你使用線圈型電熱水壺,因為它的加熱效率和平底型電熱水壺幾乎是一樣,但它的價格要便宜得多。同時,容量大的線圈型電熱水壺和線圈較長的電熱水壺在煲水時的加熱效率比線圈較短的電熱水壺稍微更佳。
4)使用保溫瓶裝熱水
沖泡熱的飲料並不需要攝氏100度的水。你可將熱水裝在保溫瓶裡。當你需要熱水時,就可以馬上倒出。這是一個很多人已經遺忘掉的做法。請記得,使用平底型電熱水壺來煮沸1杯或2杯的水不但浪費能源資源,而且在一天內重複幾次(煮沸1杯或2杯),將造成你的電費無謂地上漲。
5)需要時才煲水
在需要時才煲水,或考慮使用一個熱水瓶來保持熱水的溫度。
■其他
1)避免在烹飪時打開烤箱的門。
2)確保你累積足夠的骯髒碗碟,才放入洗碗機內清洗。


省電竅門

●儘可能使用天然光(陽光)。
●為了使房間更亮,可選擇淺色的漆,有助反射光線。
●定期清潔燈泡和燈具,燈泡和其反射器上的灰塵將造成更低的亮度和能源效率。
●關掉電器。待機狀態(Standby Power)的用電量可高達你的家庭用電量的10%。
●不要讓電器處於待機狀態。這樣的話,你一年內可節省約78令吉50的電費。(根據用電量:每300k W h,最低電費率:RM0.218/kWh)●無需使用時,拔掉正在充電的電器如MP3和手機等。當電池已充電完畢,如果你繼續讓這些電器處於充電模式(Charging Mode),那就是浪費電。
●如果電器已經用了10至15年,你應該考慮更換電器,因較舊的電器耗電量可能是新款電器的三倍。
●當你計劃買新電器時,考慮兩個價格體系(Two Price Tags)。第一個價格是購買電器的成本,第二個價格是你使用電器時所須付的電費。在一般情況下,第二個價格可能會“追隨”你5年以上。
●定期清洗和維修所有的電器。
時間久了,灰塵將積聚在電器上。這將降低電器的操作能力。這最終將導致電器消耗更多的電力。
●能源標籤(Energy Rating Labels)是你在購買電器時的`好幫手’。在我國,我們使用的是5星標籤(5S T A RRating)。這些電器產品會標有1星至5星的標籤(5星是最節能;1星是最低能源效率)。
●買面向南方或北方的房子或產業,因為這將可減少陽光直射入屋內。
●隔熱(Thermal Insulation)是保持你房子或產業涼爽的一個好辦法。你須根據房子或產業內的活動類型而選擇合適的隔熱方法。
●將木制櫥柜或傢俱(非熱導體)放置在受到陽光直射的牆壁或地方。這將減少透入室內的熱氣。
●當一個電器擁有更多不必要或附加功能時,它僅會增加耗電量,你應只使用具備基本功能和高效節能的電器,不要相信那些“無根據的甜言蜜語”。

Businesses to set thermostats higher to cope with electricity tariff hike


   
PETALING JAYA: It’s going to get warmer indoors in 2014 as shopping malls, tall buildings and offices raise temperatures to cut electricity costs.
The Malaysian Association for Shopping and Highrise Complex Management is advising its 400-odd members nationwide to set their air-conditioning at 23°C or 24°C.
Air conditioning, according to the association, takes up the largest share of energy – about 65% – in commercial buildings.
Its president H.C. Chan said most malls in the country are now too cold, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 23°C.
“We can and should move up a few degrees especially now with mounting energy costs. The reality is that we need to be energy efficient and eliminate waste because electricity is our single, largest expenditure,” he added.
Chan noted that the government in countries like China and Singapore issues guidelines to regulate temperatures in commercial buildings at between 24°C and 26°C.
Building Management Association of Malaysia and International Real Estate Federation of Malaysia committee member Richard Chan said air-conditioning accounts for the bulk of the electricity bill in malls and high-rises.
“The bigger malls or complexes pay anything from RM2mil to RM3mil monthly on air-conditioning alone,” he said.
He said raising the temperature setting of the air conditioner “even by one degree” could significantly reduce bills.
Some buildings feel warm because of poor ventilation, and Chan proposed the management look into improving air circulation. Buildings with glass domes or glass panelling let in more heat, making it more expensive to maintain a comfortable ambience.
“Buildings where employees wear jackets should adjust the temperature. Operators must ensure that air-conditioners are set at an ideal level, properly maintained and regularly serviced,” he said, adding that faulty timers can cause lights and air-conditioners to run non-stop.
Common facilities at medium cost apartments like libraries and gyms may also have the air-conditioning on for certain periods or only in certain corners.
“The saunas will be turned on only when residents request for it (no longer fixed hours),” said Chan.
He said an “energy wheel” (see graphic) is a simple guide to monitoring electricity use.
Malaysian Employers Federation executive director Shamsuddin Bar-dan said companies must take measures to mitigate the tariff hike.
“Set your air conditioners at optimal temperature to avoid waste and switch everything off when staff are out for lunch,” he said. “The costs of converting to energy savings devices like LED lights are expensive but effective in the long term.”
MEF represents 4,500 member companies and 18 affiliate trades associations.
Shamsuddin said employers “may be tempted” to cut back on staircases and parking area lighting and cautioned them against compromising their employees’ safety.
Malaysian Medical Association president Datuk Dr N.K.S. Tharma-seelan said stand-alone clinics that are already struggling to meet rising overheads are certain to replace air-conditioners with fans. “This is especially so for 24-hour clinics,” he said.
He said government hospitals had already set the air-conditioners at 24°C for the common spaces and 22°C for the operating theatre and Intensive Care Unit.
“The highest you can go is 22°C Celsius but 18°C is best.
“The operating theatre and ICU must be cold to prevent germs that cause infections from breeding,” he said.
Private hospitals will not risk making their patients uncomfortable, so the cost of keeping the place cool will have to be passed on to the patients, he said. There are over 7,600 private clinics and hospitals nationwide and the association has over 3,000 members.

Part 3: How to save energy for lighting in China?

The Great Wall of China in Ba Da Ling. We took about one and half hour journey from Beijing town to Ba Da Ling via High speed train or local express shuttle bus.

 Guest house in Beijing name 235 Guest house is located in Old Beijing town. 10 minutes walking distance to nearest subway station. A great choice for backpackers especially Malaysian who are looking affordable pricing and clean room . The room rate  start from 200 Yuan=RM100 per night for 2 person during Spring Season (April 2013). Plenty of convenience shops and local Chinese Food Cuisine Restaurant (Beijing Style food & Muslim foods)  are available for those who are hunting for local food.

This is the long stretch of corridors to access your guest house room. Green building design such as semi transparent glass window design style allows natural sun as a great lighting source for indoor during day time.

 At night, motion sensor incorporated with photocell are used along the corridors to control the all the lighting.

My recent holiday visit to Beijing was an amazing experience to see how a large population country such as  China in effort of creating a sustainable and energy saving environment  for their future generation.

Part 1:
China has their own energy star label which is called China Energy LABEL.

Rating 1: Most Energy Efficient (Least Energy Consumption)
Rating 3: Middle Range of Energy Efficient
Rating 5: Most inefficient (Highest Energy Consumption)

Based on the China Energy Label of this air conditional, it is categorized Rating as 2.77. (Middle range of Energy efficient)

How to save energy in Laos ? Energy Star

Laos is famous of  World Heritage sites declared by UNESCO since the year 1995. 
Today, Luang Prabang township has transformed 1960 styles shops to guest houses, bars and entertainment spots to meet the increasing demand of tourists inflow to this heritage township. Early of morning (about 6:30AM),  ceremony of  food giving to monks is the start of the day in Luang Prabang.
This is the guest house located in the heritage township -Luang Prabang operated by Malaysian. Most of tourists and local people using bicycles and motorcycles to travel around the town. It is safe to ride bicycle and enjoy the fresh atmosphere without traffic jam and pollution hassle. 
Conclusion: Low Carbon Emission township in transportation

All guesthouse in Laos are well aware about Energy efficiency. 99% of guest house in Laos using 5 Energy Star air conditional  (Energy Star Rating-Most energy efficiency) and preset the temperature of 24 degree C. Honestly, we don't need air conditional in Laos. The outdoor temperature is below 24 degree C during night time.

 
5 energy star rating refrigerator is commonly used in their household and phamancy. Personally, i saw all home appliances sold in their electrical appliances shops are rated at 5 Energy Star.

Another great example is 5 Energy Star water heater/hot shower in Luang Prabang Guest house.

How Toyota Workshop save energy



Sending your car for regular maintenance at Toyota authorized workshop might be a boring task for most of us. A friend of mine sending his Toyota Prius for car maintenance at Toyota workshop, Balakong recently.As part of Toyota 's energy saving initiative,  T3 lightings are widely used in hangar with the clear glass rooting to allow direct sun light shine into the workshop.

As a whole, sufficient day light and T3 lightings installation have made Toyota Workshop a great example of energy efficient and safer workplace!

How to save energy in Car parking lighting-The Mines




The Mines shopping located in Serdang is currently under I Capital Mall management. A lot of face lifting projects within shopping complex had transformed  The Mines as one of the main attraction within Klang Valley region.

Car parking lighting in The Mines also part of their management initiative to save energy and conserve the energy.

From my observation, conventional fluorescent lightings (T8- 45W) in their car parking lighting system are not longer been used and all replaced by T3  energy saving fluorescent lighting (18W).

As we all realized that car parking lighting system are operating in 24 hours basic and replacement of T3 fluorescent lighting contributing energy saving up to 60% in electricity bill can be realized with minimal capital investment.

Furthermore, motion sensors and de-lamp system also incorporated in their car parking bay to allow individual lighting to light up when customers approach to their car parking.

Overall, implementation of energy saving in car parking lighting should also consider safety of customers as their first priority!!

Energy Audit at Home-Laptop


To save Energy at home, firstly.. we need to identify which appliance at home is inefficient and how much we spend per day and per year for electrical equipment if we let it power up.

Recently, I bought an energy monitoring socket to conduct energy audit  on my home appliances. The first item under my energy audit item is my 14 inchi old  Hp compaq 4400 laptop which i used to surf net all the time.

This energy monitoring socket looks cool as i can measure my laptop energy usage once i press reset (using pen to touch the reset point) and the built-in counter/timer start to calculate how much my laptop power consumption per day and even per year. I set the cost tariff as 1kwh=$0.22  and it able to estimate the cost that i am going to spend for a year  (365 days and 24 hours running) about RM43.80 if i leave my laptop working all the time.

Currently , my laptop is consuming about 26W as shown in the picture.(The figure may varry from standby mode up to battery charging mode -63W).
According to the given manual, the working voltage :150V-276V and operating current :13A max  with the accurancy +/- 2%. 

From my observation, this product is not bad for rough checking power consumption and  it is able to give you a snapshot about energy consumption and estimated cost such as how much you need to spend for that particular domestic appliances when the power supply On.It is so simple, safe and easy for average people to use it because what we need to do is just plug the energy monitoring socket with the appliances and it auto detect and calculate for us without hassle and dangerous.

This energy monitoring socket offer affordable and competitive low end pricing (below RM200), end user need to compromise with some accuracy problem. From my finding and comparison with expensive energy monitoring unit, the error might up to 5% or more and it is not advisable to use it for any profesional report writing purpose.  Again , a high end power quality energy monitoring system can cost us up to RM60,000 or more based on high sampling rate and high accuracy.I don't think any of average household who  willing to fork out money to buy high precise which commonly  used in industry application. Therefore, with that affordable price, i think the money spent is well worth because this simple gadget is sufficient for us to monitor our power usage and save energy is the end of objective.

Govt to ban incandescent bulbs by 2014


PETALING JAYA (Oct 16, 2012): The Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry has announced phasing out traditional light bulbs – also known as incandescent bulbs, that will eventually lead to a complete ban in 2014.
The policy is part of the government's initiative to reduce carbon intensity by 40% by 2020, and to enable consumers to use energy efficiently by using energy-saving lights such as the compact fluorescent lights (CFL), T5 tube lights and light emitting diode (LED) lights.
The implementation of the policy is being done in two phases, with the first phase in 2011, seeing a ban on the sale and import of 100-watt incandescent light bulbs.
The second phase is currently being carried out from Jan 1 this year until Dec 31 next year where the government will ban the manufacture, import and sale of the 100-watt lights.
This will save consumers about RM336 million a year if they buy energy-saving lights as incandescent bulbs are less energy efficient and are not as environmentally friendly.
Other countries have also initiated similar policies, with China banning imports and sales of certain incandescent light bulbs starting this month, and gradually extending the ban to those over 15-watt in Oct 2016.
Anticipating huge global demand for LEDs, the Department of Standards Malaysia will help local companies adopt international standards and speed up the industry's adoption of Malaysian Standard (MS) to ensure production of high quality LEDs for export and domestic use.
A total of 12 MS have been published so far, covering safety, testing and performance of LEDs. These international standards were adopted from the International Electrotechnical Commission, where compliance to MS will increase local manufacturers' access to international markets.
International certification within Malaysia is also available, with the first LED-SSL certification centre outside of the US was set up in Penang in 2011 to perform testing in accordance with the standards of the American National Standards Institute.

Green tech won't put you in the red

KUALA LUMPUR: It is not enough to go around proclaiming that green is good for the environment and healthier living.
The masses must also be shown that going green in their lives is not going to be expensive, said Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water.
He said the people must also learn that environmentally-friendly products and services are cost efficient, meaning they can help them save money.
He was speaking at a briefing for news media on the upcoming iGEM (International Green Tech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia) 2012.
Among the event's objectives is to show the many green technology products and services available; these range from home appliances to industrial clean-energy solutions.
Chin said the adoption of these technologies will help reduce the country's carbon footprint.
Malaysia aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 40%, following a pledge made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen three years ago.
But there is no point in just encouraging the use of green technologies if too few or no one uses them, Chin said.
He said the uptake of these technologies rests on teaching more people about employing such products and services, and we see iGEM helping us to achieve this goal.
The Government is doing its part via its Save (sustainability achieved via energy efficiency) initiative - which provides discount vouchers to consumers who want to buy energy-saving home appliances.
"Results have been encouraging and my ministry is thinking up more initiatives to further encourage consumers to adopt an environmentally-friendly lifestyle," Chin said.
iGEM 2012 is scheduled to open at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre tomorrow. It will last until Saturday.
There will be about 600 booths by more than 300 exhibitors, and visitors can look forward to seeing how green technology is employed in different countries and industries.
Also there, will be a Green Book Resource Centre where visitors can go learn more about green technologies.
The theme for iGEM 2012 is Green Tech for Growth, and the organisers are expecting about 100,000 visitors this year. Last year iGEM drew about 68,000 visitors.
