Feed In Tariff : How to make money from solar without losing your money?

 

One of the popular passive income today is selling your solar power to TNB, Malaysia Grid daily and collecting your monthly payment from SEDA via TNB payment system direct to your personal banking account.

However, how to ensure your solar system always working hard for you during sunny day or cloudy day without interruption?

What will happen if your  solar inverter ( convert DC supply from solar panel to AC) is not working? There will be no income for you as long as your inverter is tripped and alarm is raised with message " Missing Grid". Your inverter system is totally shut off from system and no energy is exporting to the TNB system if you are not aware of this problem. 

For those Fit owner, please keep an eye to your inverter system from time to time. If your inverter's alarm is raised, please take a look on the inverter screen to find out what is the issue. Most of the inverter technology today is implementing self diagnosis feature and the screen will display what is going wrong in your solar system.

The most common problem such as " Missing Grid" code come out from the inverter screen mainly  due to the tripping of Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) during lightning strike. If your ELCB is tripped , just push back your ELCB back to switch On position and your inverter will back to Normal again. The inverter alarm will clear and your solar system will continue to work hard for you to make money!

拓展硬體設施以校養校 公教中學裝太陽能電板

　（八打靈再也2日訊）八打靈公教中學為了拓展校內硬體設施，計劃籌建一棟3層樓校舍及安裝太陽能發電板于體育中心屋頂，兩項措施預計耗資200萬令吉。

　該校董事長拿督林福山指出，該校在八打靈再也區算是唯一以中文為主的國民型中學，每年新生報讀情況踴躍，今年學生人數更達至3000人，上下午班共78班。

　“很多家長招收新生期間，希望孩子能順利報讀該校，以該校目前的硬體設施來說，已無法應付學生學習需求量。”

　林福山希望透過家長、教職員、董事部及家協力量，向外界籌募建設經費，讓學生能有更完善的學習空間。

　另外，該校校長王文說，該校屬于政府半資助中學，平時開銷非常龐大，單是電費每年至少需20萬令吉。

灌輸環保理念

　“為了解決支出問題，該校決定在體育中心屋頂安裝太陽能發電板，除了減輕學校負擔達至‘以校養校’的理念，也能教育年輕一代關注再生能源及環保的重要性。”

　他直言，該校因學生人數眾多必須開設上下午班，長遠計劃將需增建28間課室，以達至教育部推行的全日制措施。

　林福山及王文今早為該校籌募建設經費召開記者會時，這么指出。

　出席者包括八打靈公教中學董事陳琳、鄭瑞成、家協主席郭智強、大學先修班副校長連啟芳、校友林茂良及牧師鍾振勇。

10月執行．21年合約
年產價值25萬電源

公教中學董事張發龍說，該校已和馬來西亞永續能源發展機構（SEDA）簽署可再生能源計劃合約，校內太陽能發電板將在今年10月開始執行，合約期為21年。

　他指出，該可再生能源計劃合約是在電力收購制計劃（Feed in-Tariff，Fit）下的措施，太陽能發電板產生的電源必須賣給國能，估計安裝在該校的太陽能發電板每年可生產價值25萬令吉的電源，平衡每年20萬令吉電費的開銷。

　“該發電措施將成為未來趨勢，在沒有煙及二氧化碳排出的情況下，達到環保效益。”

　他直言，該校是全馬78間國民型中學中，首間採用該措施的學校，希望其他學校也能進行此計劃，達到“以校養校”。

　此外，該校3層樓校舍計劃會在今年大馬教育文憑考試過后動工，預計耗時8個月，校方將舉辦各項籌款活動，包括晚宴以籌集建築費，欲知詳情可聯絡：03-79565484。

Senheng will offer 3 residential solar PV system packages – 4kWp will cost around RM40,800, 8kWp will cost around RM81,600 and 12kWp will cost around RM122,400 to set-up. All packages come with first 3 years maintenance service for free.

It is generally known that the set-up costs of a residential solar PV system is high, but now Senheng is pioneering a market breakthrough by providing 85% financing solution with special low interest rate for customers. To make the plan more attractive, customers are entitled to a 15% cash rebate after full installation.

Senheng will be the first and only retailer to introduce the residential solar PV system to the mass market which will only be initially available at Klang Valley Senheng outlets and senQ Digital Stations on the 5th of August 2013 onwards. Availability to other states will expand over time.

How to protect Solar Controller from Lightning?

Selling solar power via Feed in Tariff subject to connect and synchronize Solar power with TNB Grid system daily. How to ensure our solar power installation system including expensive inverter controller able to sustain and continue to produce electricity without the interruption of heavy lightning strike?

Failure of solar inverter controller will cause the whole solar system collapse. Owner will lose his constant solar income due to prolong outage. Several issue such as  lead time  for solar inverter replacement shipment plus site troubleshooting by qualified solar installer especially for home installation far from Klang Valley certainly will damp down the feed in tariff income and return of investment (ROI).

To solve the lightning problem is simple. Industry are using Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) or common known as surge absorber/suppresser is install at the front line of solar installation to protect against overvoltage strike that might damage our inverter system.

Colour code indicator on the surge absorber is indicating the state of lightning protection.

Green colour = healthy and able to take the lightning strikes. If the indicator changes to red, there is no more protection against lightning. Replace the surge absorber to ensure the inverter and solar system always intact with TNB system even during lightning strikes.

How much I can earn money from Solar Power  via Feed In Tariff during cloudy day?

There is significant reduction of solar power generation during cloudy day.
Based on my record ( 30 Jun 2013), 4kwp solar power only produces  13 units (KWh) and it translates to 13x RM1.30=RM 16.90 income for the owner.

From my observation, the hottest day with clear sky capable to produce up to 19 units (29 Jun 2013) and average is approximately 16 units per day.
