Solar Tower for the 2016 Olympic Games - Rio de Janeiro

Solar Tower for the 2016 Olympic Games - Rio de Janeiro

The challenge was to design a vertical structure on the island of  Cotonduba that in addition to serving as an observation tower would  become a symbol of welcome to newcomers in Rio either by sea or by air  once it has been host city of 2016 Olympic Games.

Designed by RAFA firm headquartered in Zurich , Switzerland , it is called " Solar City Tower , this structure was chosen in response to the initial proposal and it has the potential to generate enough energy not
only for the Olympic city, but also for part of the city of Rio .

It design makes it stores solar energy during the day thanks to signs at ground level, while the surplus energy produced is piped to pump sea  water within tower giving the effect of a waterfall outside. This water
is reused simultaneously by turbines which are designed to produce energy during the night
These characteristics give it the epithet tower generator which is intended as a continuation of some of the resolutions taken during the Earth Summit United Nations in 1992 that took place in Rio and also promotes the use of natural resources in energy among these people.

The tower also has an amphitheater, an auditorium, cafeteria and shops accessible on the ground floor where you can take an elevator that leads to various observatories and a retractable platform for the practice of
bungee.

At the top of the tower, it will be possible to appreciate the scenery around the island where she will be erected and its waterfall will become a benchmark for 2016 and the city of Rio de Janeiro .

Sabah IPPS Tripped and Triggered Statewide Power outage

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Gas Terminal in Gayang, Sepanggar, near here, which supplies gas to three independent power producers (IPP), suffered a technical glitch Thursday, causing trips in two of the IPPs, and triggering a statewide power outage.

In a statement, Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) said the glitch at 7.25pm shut off the gas supply to Ranhill Powerton II (130MW) and Sepanggar Bay Power Corporation (SBPC) (100MW), causing the trips.

Another IPP, Ranhill Powerton I (190MW), had to switch to diesel to continue operating.

The incident triggered a generation shortfall of 230MW, forcing load sheddings in several areas.

Among areas affected in the outage were Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Papar, Beaufort, Keningau, Kota Marudu, Kota Belud, Lahad Datu, Sandakan, Tawau and Labuan.

The supply was restored in stages from 7.35pm, it said.

SESB said Sabah's peak demand at the moment was 780MW, with gas-fired generation capacity amounting to 420MW or 57 per cent of SESB's total generation capacity. - Bernama

Tough questions face future of all-electric vehicles

Tough questions face future of all-electric vehicles

Major obstacles to all-electric cars must be overcome before much acceptance by public

All-electric vehicles will never gain public acceptance until the problem of remote recharging is solved, so warms a research engineer with Boston College. John Magee calls it "range anxiety" and people will be concerned about traveling from home without the ability to recharge.

Vehicles like the Chevy Volt are not the concern, says Magee, because it uses a combination of gasoline and electricity. When the battery runs down they can always switch over to gas, he says. But it is not the same with totally electric vehicles, and that is where range anxiety comes in. "People will want to recharge while they go shopping so they won't get stuck if they have that pure electric vehicle," Magee says.

And Magee goes even further by saying such charging facilities should be mandatory, perhaps starting with local ordinances. "We will need public charging stations," says Magee, "places where the general public will be able to charge the vehicles ... stations that work somewhat like parking meters, were you'll pull up and plug in, and pay for a certain amount of electricity."

Magee admitted that local ordinances mandating such stations would be only a start, at some time it would have to be uniform everywhere. We already have a national policy that requires handicapped parking spaces, says Magee, "and we can have a similar policy with charging stations."

Magee made his comments by phone from his home in Boston on the ScienceNews Radio Network program, the Promise of Tomorrow with Colonel Mason. On the program Mason asked Magee if motels and hotels would naturally be the best place to start. Magee agreed, and said hotels won't want extension cords hanging from windows to cars in the parking lot. The broadcast can now be heard archived at the website for a world audience.

Magee is bringing these questions to a world energy conference produced by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) styled Innovative Technologies for an Efficient and Reliable Electricity Supply. The conference is at a hotel in Boston September 27 - 29 where Magee hopes to "get thinking started" on this issue, recruit experts and come up with a concise document that "puts in one place the policy needs, the technical needs, and what the towns can actually enact in order to solve the problem."

Electricity storage capability taking massive leap

Electricity storage capability taking massive leap

Superconducting magnetic coil technology to solve electricity storage problems, leaving battery advances in the dust

DALLAS, Aug. 31, 2010. The senior director of marketing and government affairs for SuperPower, Trudy Lehner, announced today that it is one of three organizations being funded by the US Department of Energy (DoE) to co-develop advanced Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage Systems (SMES). "This is something that isn't yet available," said Lehner, "a very aggressive project."

The funding of $4.2 million is coming as a grant from the DoE's bold new arm, the Advanced Research Project Agency - Energy (ARPA-E), to three organizations working together, ABB, Brookhaven National Labs and SuperPower, a manufacturer of superconducting wire, together with SuperPower's R&D group at the University of Houston.

"We all know that renewable energy has a very large focus, not only in the US, but around the world," said Lehner. "But the problem is that when that energy from wind or from solar is generated, it is not always at the same time it is needed by users. So we need ways to be able to store that energy. SMES will be able to store much larger amounts of energy than batteries and for longer periods of time."

This is novel technology, storing electricity from the power grid in the magnetic field of a coil that is made of superconducting wire with near zero loss of energy. Lehner made her dramatic announcement by phone from her office in Schenectady, NY, on the ScienceNews Radio Network program, the Promise of Tomorrow with Colonel Mason. "This is certainly a game-changer," a surprised Mason can be heard to respond, "we always thought the only solution was going to come from batteries and have been disappointed with their being so slow to develop." The broadcast originates in Dallas, Texas, and can now be heard at the website, archived for its world audience.

Lehner admitted that the wire is currently quite costly, but said they are working with the University of Houston in developing a new type of wire to bring down the price.

The three year project will develop a 20 KW ultra high field SMES device targeting a capacity up to 3.4 mega-joules at a field of about 30 Tesla, operating at around 4.2 degrees Kelvin. It will have "instantaneous dynamic response and a near infinite cycle life," said Lehner.

These dramatic advances will be a main attraction next month when the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) unveils its world energy conference, styled Innovative Technologies for an Efficient and Reliable Electricity Supply, at a hotel in Boston September 27 - 29. The public is welcome to attend by registering at the website.

Nissan is open to China green car alliance-exec

Written by Reuters
Saturday, 04 September 2010 21:32

TIANJIN: Nissan Motor is open to a green car alliance with Chinese automakers, a senior executive said on Saturday, Sept 4 as it moves to tap the fledgling industry in the world's largest auto market.

Nissan, 44 percent held by Renault SA, is joining General Motors and others in the race for green vehicles which industry observers say could be the next industry gold mine.

"It's impossible to develop electric vehicles alone. Joint effort is a more feasible solution," Yasuaki Hashimoto, president of Nissan China Investment Co, said in an interview on the sidelines of an industry event in the northern municipality of Tianjin.

When asked whether Nissan was interested in being part of a green vehicle alliance, made up of 16 Chinese state auto groups, Hashimoto said: "We are open to all options."

"Mr Li had also said the alliance won't stop at the existing 16 member companies only. It can be expanded," Hashimoto said, referring to Li Rongrong, head of China's state asset watchdog who has recently retired.

Nissan, which runs an auto venture with Dongfeng Motor Group, had earlier signed a deal with the municipal government of Wuhan to jointly promote its electric vehicle Leaf in the central Chinese city.

That would be one of the Japanese automaker's priorities in China next year, said Tsunehiko Nakagawa, vice president of Nissan China Investment.

Beijing launched a pilot scheme in five Chinese cities in the middle of this year to subsidise green car buyers, with handouts ranging from 3,000 yuan ($439.6) for fuel-saving models to 60,000 yuan for electric cars as it moves to cut fuel emission in the world's second largest economy.

The government may have more work to do to bolster demand for green models, such as standardizing industry specifications and building up a charging station network in the country, said Hashimoto.

Other foreign automakers are also on the move.

GM plans to launch its Chevy Volt next year in China, its biggest market, while Ford Motor and Volkswagen AG are also speeding up their effort of improve fuel-efficiency of their models. - Reuters
