Three month free parking pass for Hybrid car users in PJ

THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has allocated RM4mil in its 2012 budget for emergency works to expedite its services.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said many departments fail to take immediate action upon receiving complaints due to the lack of funds.

“I hope this move will solve any financial problems. The money will serve as back-up to ensure complaints are settled faster,” he said after announcing the budget themed “PJ Cares” at its headquarters.

The highlights include a RM100,000 allocation for installing and maintaining energy-saving lights at the back of houses to brighten dark lanes — provided the house owners agree to pay the electricity charges.

“This is in line with the Safe City project. It would only cost about RM10 extra every month for a household,” he said.

MBPJ will also be giving out RM2,000 to each senior citizens’ organisation registered with the council to fund their activities.

A RM150,000 allocation has been set aside to provide workshops and courses for petty traders to improve themselves.

In an effort to promote arts and culture, MBPJ will waive the rental of Civic Hall Auditorium for one cultural society once every month to conduct cultural shows.

MBPJ is also encouraging the purchase of hybrid cars and simultaneously helping to boost the business of Petaling Jaya car dealers.

“Petaling Jaya residents who buy hybrid cars from dealers in the city will receive a parking pass to enjoy three months of free parking in areas under MBPJ’s jurisdiction.

“To discourage the use of paper, those opting to receive their assessment tax bill online will be in the running to win a hybrid car in a draw to be held in September 2012,” he said, in line with MBPJ heading towards a paperless organisation.

The council’s total expenditure has been set at RM281.1mil, an increase by RM9.1mil compared to last year. The revenue is also expected to increased by RM17.8mil and totals at RM281.1mil.

Proton sees fillip to green car ownership

The government's efforts in driving the "green" initiative as outlined in the 2012 Budget, will encourage market acceptance and further motivate Malaysians to own green vehicles, says Proton Holdings Bhd (Proton).

Its Group Managing Director, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said: "This is a positive point for Proton as we are moving towards this direction with the development of green vehicles, namely the Saga EV and Exora REEV."

Both cars are now being put on road-trial via Proton's Fleeting Testing Vehicle (FTV) Programme with the government, he said in a statement today.

However, he hoped, that this will be subsequently followed with more initiatives by the government to further encourage the take-up of such vehicles, including measures to reduce cost of ownership and localisation of related component parts.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in tabling the 2012 Budget in Parliament yesterday, proposed a full exemption of import and excise duty on hybrid and electric cars to continue to be given to franchise holders, to promote green technology and ensure sustainable development of the industry.

Meanwhile, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) Managing Director, Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the 2012 Budget will definitely help lessen the impact of global economic challenges. -- Bernama

Using Solar to Charge up your Modenas-Electric Bike

Upon the arrival of Modenas Electric Motorcycle to our workplace, an outspoken workmate was complaining about this e-bike.He mention that he didn't see any good reason to purchase so called environment friendly electric bike as it is still consuming indirect  fossil fuel burning via charging up the Modenas's battery from our local electricity utility company -TNB.

Ya..If you talking to typically  rigid mind set people who are talking about dollars and cents, believe me or not, he wouldn't even consider to replace existing running petrol powered motorcycle with this e-bike after taking consideration of return  investment and etcs.....But if you meet someone who is environmental mentality, like our friend  Mr Foo, he would definately tell you how your electric motorcycle able to ride without burning the fossil fuel!

The secret is using solar energy from the sun via solar panels on his house rooftop to charge up his Modenas Electric bike daily. Output of the wall socket in the parking bay is AC (in the pic) after going thru the inverter unit.Stay tuned and more info about solar charging rate and performance will be posted here soon.

Modenas Electric Motorcycle -User Experience Journey Part-1

The first Modenas electric motorcycle is on the road now.My friend started to charge the Modenas motorcycle at home yesterday upon the new delivery. For initial stage, he has charged the modenas motorcycle up to 12 hours to obtain optimum power of the motorcycle. The cost of per charging is about RM0.40 and it can able to ride up to two days usage for 50kM distance.

For Rule of thumb:
How much you can save if using petrol powered motorcycle compared to electric motocycle ?

If you using RM8 per week for your petrol comsumption, Modenas Electric Motorcycle might cost user about RM0.80 , about 1/10 part of petrol cost if the RON95 maintain about RM1.90 per litre.

There are more info and tips on  how to manage the limited battery resource of Modenas Electric Motorcycle in my future post soon.Stay tuned.

Modenas eyes 500 electric bike sales a month

Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) expects to sell 500 units of environmentally-friendly electric motor cycles a month.

Its chief executive officer, Abd Halim Ismail, said the bike, Modenas CTric, has also made its international mark with an order for 100 bikes by Iran.

"The bikes will be sent to Iran by end of this month. It has also planned to buy 200 bikes every month," he said.

Abd Halim said this at a media briefing after the launch of the bike by Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, here today.

He said South Korea, Greece, Poland and Vietnam were also interested to buy the bikes.

Abd Halim said the CTric has also created history, being fully developed, assembled and manufactured in Malaysia, using 80 per cent local components and 20 per cent from China.

Earlier, Kong said the CTric was the first electric bike to get the nod from SIRIM and Road Transport Department (JPJ).

"The amendment to the Road Transport Act 1987 last December has allowed the electric vehicles to register with JPJ. Prior to that, the Act disallowed the registration because it needed to record the chassis and engine numbers.

"The electric vehicle only has chassis number," he said.

The CTric comes in two colours -- green and orange. It retails at RM4,888 (including road tax and insurance). -- Bernama

Eclimo hopes to sell 40,000 scooters by end of this year

Eclimo, a wholly-Malaysian-owned outfit which produces two-wheel electric vehicles (EVs), plans to sell at least 40,000 scooters by the end of this year after their launch next month.

It is optimistic of this despite the fact that it has yet to get clearance from the Road and Transport Department (JPJ) to sell EVs in Malaysia.

"We are optimistic that we can get the approval from JPJ with the minister's (Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui) support," said Eclimo director KB Woo, referring to the minister who was present at the unveiling of the company's three electric motorcycles in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Woo said the first launch is slated within the next one to two months and it will be the scooter range, the ES11, targeted at the middle class to upper class market.

"Our target market would be 3 to 4 per cent of the total motorcycle usage, which is half-a-million Malaysians at present," he said.

The ES11 will be priced at RM10,000 and comes with a five-year warranty.

The company plans to launch two more electric bikes this year, the EB25 200cc and the ES10.

"We have not determined the price for these two models yet but rest assured they will be competitively priced," Woo said.

The EVs are made in Shah Alam, Selangor, while the batteries are produced by a locally-listed company.

"We also plan to export some of these EVs overseas, especially in countries where the cost of fuel is very high," he added.

Govt may ban electric bicycles

PUTRAJAYA: Electric bicycles may be taken off the road if the Cabinet accepts a recommendation from the Transport Ministry.

Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said he will be presenting a paper during Friday’s Cabinet meeting to recommend disallowing electric bicycles, citing safety reasons.

He said continuing to allow electric bicycles, which have battery-powered motors, could result in a higher risk of injury or death.

“Electric bicycles do not meet the performance specifications of motorcycles.

“It is more than a bicycle but less than a motorcycle,” he told The Star on Tuesday.

While Kong acknowledged that electric bicycles were good for the environment, he stressed that the higher risk of death and injury from collision did not warrant their usage.

“If you want to talk about being environmentally-friendly, using a normal bicycle is still the best,” he pointed out.

He added that an electric bicycle could not be classified as an electric motorcycle.

“Anyone can use it as there are no restrictions on who can use a bicycle,” he said.

“There is no need to register an electric bicycle or obtain a driving licence, road tax, insurance or registration number.

“Any young child will be able to use the electric bicycle without a crash helmet and that means a much higher risk of accidents,” he cautioned.

Kong said the paper to be presented to the Cabinet would reveal all the facts involving electric bicycles.

Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said in a statement that electric bicycles currently being sold were designed to travel more than 40km per hour.

“According to road safety studies, bicycles that move at more than 20km per hour pose a much higher risk of injury to pedestrians, especially when both share the same lane,” he said.

Solah added that facilities for cyclists like special lanes were currently limited to residential and recreational parks.

“Cyclists, who use routes other than designated ones, will be exposed to the risk of traffic accidents and contribute to the overall number of accidents,” he cautioned.

Hybrid m-bikes to revolutionise industry

Revolution Manufacturing Sdn Bhd expects to revolutionise the local motorcycle industry with the country's first hybrid motorcycles.

The company yesterday unveiled two hybrid models called GW 800HB and GW 500HB, which will be made available to the public next month.

Essentially a scooter, the 80cc GW 800HB will have a price tag of RM8,000, while the smaller 50cc GW 500HB will cost around RM7,000.
The motorcycles' hybrid drive-system combines a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric propulsion system.

Senior company executives said the hybrid motorcycles are a "successful collaboration of local engineers and researchers" over the past four years.

Revolution Manufacturing chairman Datuk Dr Mohd Yahya Nordin said the company had spent some RM6 million to develop the "green" motorcycles.

Revolution Manufacturing and its marketing arm Serunai Emas Sdn Bhd expect to sell 16,000 units of the vehicles this year. This should translate into a 2 per cent share of the total motorcycle sales volume.

For 2012, the companies aims to grab a bigger market share of 3 to 3.5 per cent.Serunai Emas chief executive officer Aubrey Insley O'Hara said the motorcycles will also be exported to countries in the region as well as South Africa and Eastern Europe. The initial export focus, however, will be Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam."We are in talks with the local parties there," O'Hara said during the motorcycles' media preview and test ride in Dengkil, Selangor, yesterday.

He added that the company plans to set up its maiden overseas plant in Bangladesh.

The hybrid motorcycles are produced by Hybrid Scooters Sdn Bhd, another subsidiary of Revolution Manufacturing, at its factory in Dengkil.

Hybrid Scooters has the exclusive manufacturing licence for hybrid motorcycles from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Company executives said the GW 800HB is capable of travelling 220km on a full tank of fuel and a fully-charged battery.

"This makes it a practical mode of transportation for long-distance travel as well as short hops, where the user may opt for the use of only the electrical motor," Mohd Yahya said.

O'Hara, meanwhile, said: "One of the hybrid motorcycle's most distinctive advantages over a full-electric motorcycle is that the former is not completely dependent on battery power.

"This is the major contributing factor to the unpopularity of full-electric motorcycles in the market today."

'Green motorcycles' set to make debut next year

PETALING JAYA: After years of waiting, Malaysians will get to ride on electric motorcycles or "green bikes" once the machines make their debut next year.

JPJ director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the Road Transport Act 1987 was being amended to exempt the requirement for the machines to have engine numbers before they can be registered.

Among the features of the "green bike" are:

● The lithium battery-powered machine offers the same performance of a 125cc petrol-powered motorcycle.

● It will be priced slightly above RM10,000.

● Modenas says it is ready to launch its electric motorcycle within the new few months.
