Lights go out for Earth Hour

KUALA LUMPUR: Cities around the world were shrouded in darkness for an hour yesterday for the annual Earth Hour celebration. This year, more than 131 countries and territories registered to take part to in the celebration.

Some of the iconic landmarks that took part in the 60-minute lights off include the world's tallest building, Burj Khalif Dubai, New York's Times Square, Brazil's Christ the Redeemer statue, Paris' Eiffel Tower, the United Kingdom's London Eye, Sydney's Opera House and the China World Trade Centre Tower 3, the tallest building in Beijing.

In Malaysia, many homes, hotels, shopping malls and iconic landmarks, including the Petronas Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur Tower and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, switched off unnecessary lights at 8.30pm sharp in a show of support against climate change.

Malaysia Airports, which joined the others in supporting the Earth Hour yesterday, switched off 30 per cent of the terminal ceiling lights at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport's main terminal building, contact pier, satellite building and the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal at KLIA.

Its general manager Mohammaed Suhaimi Abdul Mubin said: "Apart from supporting Earth Day (on April 22), this is part of our continuous commitment to preserving the environment and conserving energy at the airport."

At Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, the Earth Hour initiative was channelled to support the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami charity fundraiser.

"We are engaging the Pavilion KL community to shop and donate to a worthwhile cause where all proceeds will go to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society," said marketing director Kung Suan Ai.

Tenaga National Berhad called on its customers to use electricity wisely.

"Saving the planet should go beyond the symbolic switching off of non-essential lights for 60 minutes," TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Che Khalib Mohamad Nod said.

In 2009, the event resulted in a 550 megawatt drop in electricity consumption. Last year, however, the campaign saw a smaller load reduction of 203 megawatt.

United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon leads a host of world and civic leaders in supporting Earth Hour 2011 as a powerful symbol of a shared wish for a sustainable and secure future.

"All over the world, individuals, communities, businesses and governments are creating new examples for our common future, new visions for sustainable living and new technologies to realise it.

"Let us celebrate this shared quest to protect the planet and ensure human well-being. Let us use 60 minutes of darkness to help the world see the light," he said in the "messages of support for Earth Hour 2011" posted in the event's official website.

Earth Hour was started in 2007 in Sydney when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses switched off their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change.

The secret to saving energy right now

Turning Megawatts to negawatts
Do you know that .....
"Due to intrinsic inefficiencies, 33units of energy consumed at the point of use required 100 unit sof primary energy."

To summarize, the efficiency of energy start from coal mining, generation , transmission and up to your home is just about 33% only. There is so many energy waste along the process.

Now i am totally agreed that using gas stoved to cook our meal (direct heat from the fuel) is much more energy efficient than using electric hot plate..

Eclimo hopes to sell 40,000 scooters by end of this year

Eclimo, a wholly-Malaysian-owned outfit which produces two-wheel electric vehicles (EVs), plans to sell at least 40,000 scooters by the end of this year after their launch next month.

It is optimistic of this despite the fact that it has yet to get clearance from the Road and Transport Department (JPJ) to sell EVs in Malaysia.

"We are optimistic that we can get the approval from JPJ with the minister's (Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui) support," said Eclimo director KB Woo, referring to the minister who was present at the unveiling of the company's three electric motorcycles in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Woo said the first launch is slated within the next one to two months and it will be the scooter range, the ES11, targeted at the middle class to upper class market.

"Our target market would be 3 to 4 per cent of the total motorcycle usage, which is half-a-million Malaysians at present," he said.

The ES11 will be priced at RM10,000 and comes with a five-year warranty.

The company plans to launch two more electric bikes this year, the EB25 200cc and the ES10.

"We have not determined the price for these two models yet but rest assured they will be competitively priced," Woo said.

The EVs are made in Shah Alam, Selangor, while the batteries are produced by a locally-listed company.

"We also plan to export some of these EVs overseas, especially in countries where the cost of fuel is very high," he added.

Solar stocks rise for a second day on nuclear power worries fed by disaster in Japan

SOLAR STOCK

By: The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Stocks of solar power providers climbed for a second day Tuesday as the situation at a damaged nuclear power plant in Japan worsened, causing investors to gravitate toward companies that make solar panels and other related equipment.

SunPower Corp. rose $1.52, or 10.5 percent, to $16.02. The San Jose, Calif., company makes solar cells, panels and inverters.

Canadian Solar Inc. rose 90 cents, or 8.4 percent, to $11.65.

And Suntech Power Holdings Co., a Chinese manufacturer of solar products, rose 64 cents, or 7.7 percent, to $8.92.

The spike was particularly noticeable on a day that stocks generally tumbled on uneasiness over the impact of explosions and the release of dangerous levels of radiation at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 200 points, or 1.7 percent at midday, while the S&P 500 slid 21 points or 1.6 percent.
Kaufman Bros. analyst Jeffrey Bencik said in a note to investors that the earthquake in Japan will have an impact on the solar industry in both the short and longer term.

The immediate impact is a reduction in supply of polysilicon, solar wafers, cells and modules from Japanese manufacturers that have been idled by the earthquake. Japanese production amounts to around 10 percent of total solar production.

"Therefore, we believe the companies that will benefit the most from the recent quake are solar companies that manufacture polysilicon outside of Japan, or those who have secured their supplies of polysilicon at long-term contract pricing," he wrote.

With the idling of the nuclear power plant and its six nuclear reactors, Japan may turn to solar power for additional generation since it's easy to install, Bencik said.

The events in Japan are likely to delay new nuclear plant construction in other countries, he said. That, along with the lengthy permitting periods for new coal plants, leads Bencik to theorize that solar power may be the most likely beneficiary of the disaster.

Coal and nuclear plants generate about 70 percent of total electricity globally, he said.

Stock of other solar energy companies rose Tuesday.

Shares of JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. rose 46 cents, or 6.9 percent, to $7.15. The Shanghai, China, company makes solar energy products including solar cells.

Shares of Yingli Green Energy Holding Co., also based in China, rose 87 cents, or 7.7 percent, to $12.13. It makes photovoltaic modules for several countries including Germany, Spain, Greece, France, and the United States.

First Solar Inc. shares rose $8.11, or 5.5 percent, to $155.02 and LDK Solar Co. rose 88 cents, or 7.6 percent, to $12.46.

Malaysia to study Japan atomic accident

Malaysia wants to learn from Japan’s nuclear accident before taking a final decision on whether to establish its first atomic power plant, a minister said.

“It’s best for us to learn from the investigation results and see further,” Datuk Peter Chin, minister for energy, green technology and water, said in a telephone interview.

“What happened in Japan was due to an earthquake. On the Malaysian side, we have not decided anything yet.”

Japan’s nuclear accident has prompted China and India to review plans for atomic energy. Malaysia’s government said in September it wanted to explore nuclear power as a potential solution to the country’s long-term power needs as its oil and gas reserves start to diminish.

A tender will be called by the middle of this year to appoint a consultant to conduct a feasibility study and evaluate the site chosen, Chin said, without saying where the first plant might be.

“Only after that, the government will decide whether to tender the project or not,” he said.

“Nuclear technology is a viable energy. Look at France as an example where 72 percent of the country’s energy comes from nuclear plants.”

Prime Minister Naoto Kan said yesterday Japan is facing its worst crisis since World War II after a March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami killed an estimated 10,000 people and caused explosions at a nuclear power plant. Workers battled to prevent a nuclear meltdown after a second hydrogen explosion rocked an atomic plant north of Tokyo today. - Bloomberg

SWM plans solar power for landfills

SWM Environment Sdn Bhd (SWM), the solid waste management and public cleansing concessionaire for the Southern Region (Johor, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan), is exploring projects utilising green technology for implementation in the waste management industry.

As the largest operator of landfills in Malaysia, SWM has initiated plans to apply solar photovoltaic technology in all the landfills it operates, to generate renewable energy.

SWM Head of Technical and Project Unit, W.M. Ng said to start with, the company will embark on a solar photovoltaic pilot plant in its flagship sanitary landfill facility, the Seelong Environmental Centre in Johor Bahru District, to produce two megawatt (MW) of renewable energy.

He added that upon successful implementation, SWM will expand the solar photovoltaic project to cover all the 20 disposal facilities under its management, in the Southern Region.

"This project will complement the existing Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project at the Seelong Environmental Centre, which has been operational since 2008 and registered by the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The landfill gas is utilised for conversion to carbon credits, with a potential for renewable energy generation of up to 10MW," he said in a statement to Bernama here today.

He also said in addition to the existing renewable energy projects which SWM has been pioneering since 2000, several large scale renewable energy plants using the latest state of the art and proven technology, are already in the final stages of negotiation.

According to Ng, the total combined potential renewable energy generation from the integrated facilities by SWM is approximately 120 MW, and will be implemented in line with the Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) mechanism under the Renewable Energy Act, whereby excess power from sources of renewable energy can be sold to the utility companies.

"This will contribute significantly to the government’s objective to meet its renewable energy obligations and commitments via the Green Initiatives in line with the Economic Transformation Program (ETP)," he said. -- Bernama

Govt may ban electric bicycles

PUTRAJAYA: Electric bicycles may be taken off the road if the Cabinet accepts a recommendation from the Transport Ministry.

Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said he will be presenting a paper during Friday’s Cabinet meeting to recommend disallowing electric bicycles, citing safety reasons.

He said continuing to allow electric bicycles, which have battery-powered motors, could result in a higher risk of injury or death.

“Electric bicycles do not meet the performance specifications of motorcycles.

“It is more than a bicycle but less than a motorcycle,” he told The Star on Tuesday.

While Kong acknowledged that electric bicycles were good for the environment, he stressed that the higher risk of death and injury from collision did not warrant their usage.

“If you want to talk about being environmentally-friendly, using a normal bicycle is still the best,” he pointed out.

He added that an electric bicycle could not be classified as an electric motorcycle.

“Anyone can use it as there are no restrictions on who can use a bicycle,” he said.

“There is no need to register an electric bicycle or obtain a driving licence, road tax, insurance or registration number.

“Any young child will be able to use the electric bicycle without a crash helmet and that means a much higher risk of accidents,” he cautioned.

Kong said the paper to be presented to the Cabinet would reveal all the facts involving electric bicycles.

Road Transport Department director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said in a statement that electric bicycles currently being sold were designed to travel more than 40km per hour.

“According to road safety studies, bicycles that move at more than 20km per hour pose a much higher risk of injury to pedestrians, especially when both share the same lane,” he said.

Solah added that facilities for cyclists like special lanes were currently limited to residential and recreational parks.

“Cyclists, who use routes other than designated ones, will be exposed to the risk of traffic accidents and contribute to the overall number of accidents,” he cautioned.

Cypark to invest RM94.29m to build renewable energy park

KUALA LUMPUR: CypARK RESOURCES BHD [] plans to invest RM94.29 million to build a renewable energy park (RE Park) in Pajam, Negri Sembilan that would be capable of generating up to 10 megawatts of power.

It said on Tuesday, March 8 that the project was expected to generate Gross National Income of RM12.16 million each year for the next 21 years, totalling RM255.36 million.

Cypark's Renewable Energy Park project has been included as one of the Entry Point Projects (EPPs) of the ETP as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.

Cypark said it would spearhead an initiative to build the RE Park on 26 hectares of remediated landfill in Pajam.

The remediation and closure work of this landfill together with other 16 landfills have been carried out by Cypark, it said.

Cypark said the proposed RE Park involved the integration of three potential resources available at the landfills i.e. solar, landfill gas (biogas), and waste (biocell) into a scalable renewable energy project capable of generating up to 10 megawatts of power in Pajam Landfill alone.

The proposed sustainable economic transformation of non-sanitary landfills into RE Park is in line with the ETP (Oil & Gas and Energy: EPP 10) and shall be carried out through the private investment initiative of Cypark, it said.

“The RE Park will unlock the economic potential of landfill sites. Through a sustainable program outlined by Cypark, the economic opportunities of unsanitary landfills, otherwise locked and lost for at least 15-20 years, will be realised in the near future.

“The RE Park involves the integration of three potential resources available at the landfills i.e. solar, landfill gas (biogas) and bio-cell into a large scale renewable energy project,” it said.

Hybrid model to help Lexus hit sales target

Lexus Malaysia is confident of achieving its sales target of 1,200 units of cars this year with the introduction of the new Lexus CT 200h.

The company said the hybrid model is set to capture about 80 per cent of the total sales for the brand here.

The CT 200h is Lexus' first full hybrid luxury compact car, which will be a main selling model and is expected to do well in Malaysia. This is in addition to the support from its two existing independent Lexus dealers in Penang and Johor.

UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd president Ismet Suki said Lexus Malaysia is upbeat on the revised number, which is more than a 100 per cent increase over last year's 431 units sold.

"It's a very ambitious sales number for Lexus Malaysia, and we are confident that such a figure is achievable following the introduction of the CT 200h, which will retail at about RM200,000," Ismet said at a press conference after the opening of the Lexus Johor facility.

The facility is owned and managed by independent dealers Mutiara Motorsports Sdn Bhd, which is part of the Mutiara Motors Group of Companies.

The launched was graced by the Tunku Temenggong Johor, Tunku Idris Iskandar Sultan Ibrahim, on behalf of the Tunku Mahkota Johor.

Also present was Mutiara Motors Group of Companies executive chairman Datuk Ahmad Kemin.

Ismet said another independent dealer-managed Lexus showroom will be opened by the end of this year in the Klang Valley.

This would bring the total Lexus outlets in Malaysia to four, where the main outlet in Mutiara Damansara is operated and managed by Lexus Malaysia.

Ismet said this was a good sign for the Lexus brand in Malaysia and added that more outlets are in the pipeline following the brand's progress in Malaysia.

"It was not easy for us as we had to work hard to establish a previously unrepresented luxury brand here with proper infrastructure and brand experience."

When asked if 2011 would be a challenging year for non-national makes like Lexus following the aggressive model introductions and promotions by European car brands here, Ismet said Lexus Malaysia believed that they can still reach or exceed the projected sales target.

"Lexus is a niche car brand and it has their own customer-base who know what they want."

Ahmad, who was instrumental in opening the Lexus Johor outlet, said the RM5 million concept showroom would be a showpiece for Lexus in the southern region.

He also expressed confidence that Lexus Johor can reach sales of about 135 units for this year.
