Advantages of Toyota Prius in Malaysia Part-1

Most of the KL drivers are experiencing severe stress, especially for those driving in the traffic jam prone KL area due to closure of road for construction and etc during rush hours. But when the traffic jam is brought about unwillingly, people tend to lose their good temper and  the phenomena become worst when the increasing of fuel price in Malaysia recently.Do we really think about this matter carefully? Is that wise for us to pay so much of money for our fuel and pollute our environment with CO2 emission just because of we caught inside the traffic jam?

Toyota Prius- an environment friendly car, is designed to cater the drivers who drive their car in the traffic jam area with ECO (Economy) mode.

First Solar Power Petrol Station in Malaysia-BP Kesas Station

BP Kesas Station (Petrol Kiosk) was the first in Malaysia and one of the first in the world to use energy generated by Solar Panels designed and built by BP.

I have an interesting brochure from BP Solar Station. According to the brochure,it used up to 15% of the energy from solar panel for BP Station's needs. The panels on the roof of the station as big as a tennis court and provide an average of 13,000kilowatt hours per year.

Malaysia electricity tariff for commercial

Tariff B - Low Voltage Commercial Tariff
For Overall Monthly Consumption More Than 200 kWh/month

For all kWh (From 1kWh onwards) sen/kWh 39.7

How much the BP Solar station can save from their electricity bill per year?

13,000kilowatt hours = 13,000unit

13,000 unit x RM0.40= RM5,200.00

Find out more on the BP Kesas Solar Station's brochure as below

The story of Toyota Prius in Malaysia-Chapter 1

A lot of us are wondering, how much we can save if we drive the world most  efficiency car , Hybrid Toyota Prius, under  Malaysia hot climate and "Malaysia  road condition" ?

After undergoing the first 1,000KM maintenance for the Toyota Prius, a green lover, from Kajang, Malaysia- MR Foo started his journey of Prius on the North South Highway.

His first destination is the north of Malaysia- Pasir Gudang, Johor.
Filling up his Prius full tank with Shell V Power, it costs him about RM76.00.

The total return journey was about 760KM.

Grid connected Solar System

This is a simple pictorial explains how a Grid connected solar system works in our home installation.
Photo Voltaic (PV) or solar modules connected in series are usually mounted on the top of building. In order to synchronize with local utility, the solar output Direct Current (DC) will invert to Alternating Current by means of  inverter.

Capacitor lifetime calculation?

Article from Alex McEachern) Electric Power Quality Newsletter - June 2010Sunday, June 20, 2010
Question: Capacitor lifetime calculation? (Alex Baitch)

Another old friend, Professor Alex Baitch, writes from the euphoniously-named University of Wollongong in Australia, where (at least in my experience) the single-phase line voltage can be surprisingly high...

He writes:

I was wondering whether you can help me with some investigations that I am presently undertaking. I am looking for knowledge regarding the effect of steady state voltage (or more particularly overvoltage and undervoltage) on electrical components. The body of knowledge is essentially with manufacturers as they tend to do accelerated aging testing using the technique of application of overvoltage. However, it is hard to find analytical data.

I have recently come across information from a capacitor manufacturer who provides the following relationship for metalised film capacitors: Service lifetime = (Normal voltage / Excess voltage) **9 x Service lifetime at nominal voltage. Accordingly a capacitor rated at 230V would have a life of 42% if operated at 253V instead of 230V. Intuitively sounds about right.

Assuming that a similar function applies to other types of capacitors, this has major implications for the expected service life of many devices. In particular, the present drive for energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps must have adequately rated components to ensure adequate expected life.

Are there other widely-accepted lifetime adjustments for electronic components, resulting from sustained over- or under-voltage?

LED Lighting

This is one of the proven LED Lighting available in some of famous High Rise building in Kuala Lumpur.
With this 6W power comsumption at 240V, it capable to produce up to  510lm to 660lm (lumen) depend the model.( I consider this brightness is super bright with so little power comsume)

What is the Life Span of our lighting?

The color rendering index (CRI) (sometimes called color rendition index), is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source.

Light sources with a high CRI are desirable in color-critical applications such as photography and cinematography. It is defined by the International Commission on Illumination as follows:
rendering: Effect of an illuminant on the color appearance of objects by conscious or subconscious comparison with their color appearance under a reference illuminant.

Pls refer to the table of CRI, Lumen & life span for different types of light source

Note :The lumen (symbol: lm) is the SI unit of luminous flux, a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye. Luminous flux differs from radiant flux, the measure of the total power of light emitted.

Interesting to find out that the incandescent lamp (Bulb) is the most inefficient lighting option for Malaysian.More than 90% of the energy is used for heat and only 10% of the energy is use for the lighting purpose.

Think twice before you switching on the light!!!

Honda To Lease Electric Scooters From December

Published: April 13, 2010
by The Associated Press

The green fad in Japan is expanding from cars to bikes with Honda's zero-emission super-quiet electric EV-neo scooter.
The EV-neo, shown Tuesday at Honda Motor Co.'s research facility in this Tokyo suburb, zipped around emitting just a calm whirring sound, with none of a motorcycle's gritty growl.
Honda plans to start leasing the scooters — the equivalent of a 50cc gasoline-powered bike — in December and says its target market is companies that make deliveries, such as newspapers and pizza parlors. The EV-neo has a cruising range of 30 kilometers (19 miles) on one charge.

How much we need to invest in Solar Panel?

Solar Panel or PhotoVoiltac (PV) is rated in term of Watt peak (Wp) or kiloWatt peak(kWp).
Up to date, for a branded PV panel  such as Sharp from Thailand will cost us about RM14,000 for every 1kWp.

What Is LUX?

The practical unit of illumination, using the metric system of measurement, the illumination of a surface one square  meter in area receiving an evenly distributed flux of one Lumex
 or

When luminous flux strikes a surface, the surface is said to be illuminated. The intensity of illumination, analogous to the intensity of electromagnetic radiation (which is power per unit area) is the luminous flux per unit area, called the illuminance, denoted by E. The unit of illuminance is the lumen per square meter, also called the lux:

1 lux = 1 lm/m²

We have defined the intensity of light and other electromagnetic radiation as power per unit area, measured in watts per square meter. Similarly, the total rate of radiation of energy from any of the sources of light discussed in Sec. 38-2 is called the radiant power or radiant flux, measured in watts. These quantities are not adequate to measure the visual sensation of brightness, however, for two reasons: First, not all the radiation from a source lies in the visible spectrum; and ordinary incandescent light bulb radiates more energy in the infrared than in the visible spectrum. Second, the eye is not equally sensitive to all wavelengths; a bulb emitting 1 watt of yellow light appears brighter than one emitting one watt of blue light.

The quantity analogous to radiant power, but compensated to include the above effects, is called luminous flux denoted by F. The unit of luminous flux is the lumen, abbreviated lm, defined as that quantity of light emitted by 1/60 cm² surface area of pure platinum at its melting temperature (about 1770°C), within a solid angle of 1 steradian (1 sr). As an example, the total light output (luminous flux) of a 40-watt incandescent light bulb is about 500 lm, while that of a 40-watt fluorescent tube is about 2300 lm.

First Solar Taxi in Switzerland

How is it possible to power a car with the sun?

The Solartaxi is an electric vehicle with a five-meter solar trailer covered with 6 square meters of solar cells. The electricity is stored in a newly invented ZEBRA battery, so we can even drive at night, without any sunshine. The solar cells on the trailer produce enough electricity to run the car up to 100 km a day.

If we need to drive more than 100 km a day, we need to charge our battery with additional solar power. For this purpose, we have a solar power plant on a rooftop in Berne, Switzerland. This electricity is fed into the grid, offsetting electricity generated by using fossil fuels. It's like paying money into a bank account and withdrawing the money somewhere else: We feed solar electricity into the grid and charge it into our battery anywhere in the world, from the grid. If all cars in the world were powered this way, cars wouldn't cause global warming!

Using Solar power for induction cooker

Can you image? Using solar power to power up induction cooker rated at 1kW-2kW ? (The actual power consumption is depended on your temperature control selection). For those who are not familiar with induction cooker, it is  more energy efficient than gas or electric cooker.According to manufacturer and end users, 90% of energy is directly to the pan while gas delivers only 55% heat to the pan .The electric cooker is only 65% efficiency.

Recommendation : Use only high efficiency equipment such as induction cooker if you intend to use precious solar power from your home :-)
